On June 20, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl spoke about the so-called communication tyranny in the media in the West at the session "Fighting fakes. Building a Global Infrastructure and Consolidating Efforts" within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

She noted that for some time she worked as a journalist herself and wrote articles about the real state of affairs. However, now the journalism of that old school is almost extinct.

"Journalism, in fact, has become just communication. We no longer have that profession, in fact, it has died out, which we used to do. And no, there are practically no newspapers that do real journalism. No one has ever paid me for any news. I presented everything on my own and received them for publication," she shared.

At the same time, according to the former head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, communication tyranny has been more prevalent in the Western media lately, which largely restricts the activities of media representatives in reflecting their position.

"And now the communication tyranny has begun. Ignacio Ramonet, former editor-in-chief of Le Monde Diplomatique, described this phenomenon with this term. They wanted to control the reporting. Even the Vietnam War, they wanted to control everything at the front so that people wouldn't protest," Kneissl summed up.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that Western media outlets publish narratives ordered by political parties or lobbying groups, "for which they receive appropriate grants and funding in the form of advertising." She clarified that these media outlets would not be allowed to publish a different opinion, because otherwise they would have to work on mistakes and count losses.
