The Russian Foreign Ministry told about contacts with Syria

Moscow continues contacts with Damascus and expects the visit of the Syrian delegation to Russia. Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, told reporters on June 20 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

According to him, the Russian side hopes to reach an understanding with the new leadership of Syria on the issue of Russian military bases in the country.

"We are in contact. <...> We are waiting for a delegation from Damascus, we are waiting for proposals on the timing of the trip," Bogdanov said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on May 27 that Russia welcomes the lifting of sanctions against Syria by the United States. He added that Moscow is cooperating with the new authorities in Damascus, and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with the leader of the Middle Eastern republic, Ahmed al-Sharaa, by phone. They discussed, among other things, trade, economic and other relations between the countries in the new conditions.
