Russia is interested in expanding mutually beneficial economic and investment cooperation with the Republic of South Africa. This was stated on June 20 by Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko during a meeting with South African Vice President Paul Mashatile on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

According to her, the Russian side has always considered and continues to consider South Africa as a reliable, proven partner in the joint fight against the apartheid regime.

"Trust and mutual respect are invariably inherent in the bilateral relations between Russia and South Africa. We are interested in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of economy and investment," she said.

Mashatile, in turn, stressed that the Russian Federation and South Africa have been maintaining a successful practical dialogue for many years, exchanging experience, strengthening diplomatic ties and developing cooperation.

"We intend to continue to increase cooperation in the fields of economy, investment and trade. It is necessary to strengthen mutually beneficial relations for the sake of the future of our peoples," he added.

Matvienko and Mashatile also pointed out the common approaches of the countries on global development issues. It is noted that this allows for effective cooperation in the G20 under the South African presidency this year, as well as in the framework of the United Nations, BRICS and other international platforms.

The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with the Vice President of South Africa. During the talks, the Russian leader stressed that relations between Russia and South Africa are developing on the principles of strategic partnership.
