Israel's aggression against Iran could have been organized in order to disrupt the ongoing negotiation process on the nuclear program between Tehran and Washington. This was stated on June 20 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at the XIX OANA General Assembly, held during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).
"There is a clear understanding, if at first it was a feeling, now it is a clear understanding that, unfortunately, this aggression could have been planned and could have been implemented in order to disrupt the next round of indirect, indirect negotiations through Oman, which the United States conducted with Iran," the diplomat told TASS.
Zakharova stressed that Iran's nuclear program should not cause aggression, such an issue should be a reason for diplomatic negotiations.
"Our position is that the Iranian nuclear program should not be the subject of aggressive actions, but the subject of a negotiation process. Yes, this is a difficult negotiation process, but the problem is not simple either," said the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On June 20, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, Abbas Araqchi, noted that the United States had asked Iran for talks, but Tehran ruled out a diplomatic solution amid ongoing Israeli strikes. According to him, until the Israeli aggression is stopped, dialogue and diplomacy are out of the question.
In the afternoon, Reuters reported on several telephone conversations between Araqchi and US President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, since the Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic. According to media reports, the parties briefly discussed the US proposal submitted to Iran in late May, which is aimed at creating a regional consortium for uranium enrichment outside the republic.
