Putin received an invitation to the G20 summit in South Africa
Russian President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to the G20 leaders' summit to be held in South Africa. This was announced on June 19 by the Russian Foreign Ministry's Ambassador-at-Large for G20 and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Marat Berdyev on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).
"We received an official invitation last week. This is an address by the head of state, the President of South Africa, to his colleagues. <...> Of course, the decision on this issue will be made directly by the head of the Russian state," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, the appeal is circular in nature and corresponds to the procedure available in the G20.
Berdyev stressed that the final decision on participation in the summit is usually made closer to the dates of its holding. He clarified that this takes into account a number of factors, including the overall attendance of the event and the availability of conditions for reaching agreements.
The ambassador also recalled that in recent years, Russia has been represented at G20 summits by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On May 20, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the US refusal to participate in the G20 summit. It was clarified that the refusal was due to differences of opinion with the leadership of the host country.
