The abandonment of Russian gas has a negative impact on the Moldovan economy. Igor Dodon, ex-President of Moldova and leader of the Party of Socialists of the country, told Izvestia on June 19 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

"Look, in terms of energy, during my last year as president, gas cost, well, in Moldovan prices, 4.5 lei. Under Maia Sandu, the tariff reached 30 [lei], that is, it increased 7 times. <...>. Of course, with such tariffs, well, the impoverishment of the population is understandable, we have massively gone. But the economy has also completely recovered. Because the competitiveness of goods with such expensive resources is very high. And we cannot compete both domestically and, of course, for export," Dodon said.

According to him, Moldova currently buys the same Russian gas, only through European intermediaries. In addition, Dodon stressed that it is necessary to return the dialogue between Moldova and Russia to the previous level.

"Therefore, it is necessary to return the dialogue with Russia — we are ready for this. And I am very glad that I saw the willingness on the part of the Russian Federation, today the leadership of the Ministry of Energy confirmed this," the politician said.

Dodon added that the Russian market has always been a priority for the republic's agro-industrial complex, and the current Moldovan authorities are acting on the instructions of "their Western supervisors."

On May 30, former Prime Minister of the Republic, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vladimir Filat said that Moldovan President Maia Sandu had reduced the residents to poverty and destroyed the country's economy. As the former prime minister noted, prices for gas, electricity, utilities, and food have increased in the country.
