Hungary has stated its disagreement with the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to abandon Russian gas. This was announced on June 19 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of the state Peter Szijjarto on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

"We completely reject the proposal of the European Commission. <...> We will fight against this proposal as long as it is necessary, because we do not want to abandon our energy cooperation with Russia," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Szijjarto called Russian energy supplies reliable and cheap. According to him, Hungary does not want to change the sources.

He also believes that the EC's proposal to abandon Russian gas violates European rules, which, on the one hand, state the exclusivity of the national competence of the energy balance. On the other hand, it implies Hungary's serious dependence on certain sources, which would be a clear step back from diversification.

"Therefore, we intend to continue our energy cooperation. That's why I'm here today. And that's why I'm going to negotiate with corporate executives and government officials. Therefore, we will fight against this proposal as long as it is necessary," he said.

Earlier, on June 16, Szijjarto announced damage to the entire European Union due to the EC's proposed plan to abandon Russian energy resources. He believes that the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed this only in order, according to the demands of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, to deprive Hungary and the whole of Europe of Russian energy.
