Russia intends to withdraw from the 1996 military-technical cooperation agreement with Germany, which in the current situation, given Berlin's anti-Russian attitude, has lost its meaning and practical significance. This was stated on June 19 in a statement by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

"Formally, the current agreement <...> is absolutely inconsistent with the current state of Russian-German interstate relations, which has developed due to the openly hostile policy of the German authorities and the increasingly aggressive militaristic aspirations of the German government," the agency's website says.

The ministry added that the internal procedures necessary to withdraw from the agreement have already been initiated.

"The German government is bursting with exorbitant foreign policy ambitions that directly affect vital Russian security interests. The results of Germany's military adventures are well known," the diplomats added.

German Foreign Minister Johan Vadefuhl said on June 12 that he saw no reason for direct talks with Russia, despite the initiative of a number of German Social Democrats to start a dialogue with the Russian Federation. He noted that if negotiations had taken place, Berlin "would have conducted them jointly with European partners," and Germany is "always ready" for such a format of dialogue.
