The German economy, based on small and medium-sized businesses, will be in danger of destruction if the European Union decides to permanently stop importing Russian gas. This was stated on June 19 by the head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, Ralf Niemeyer, in an interview with RIA Novosti on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"If the EU completely bans the import of Russian gas, our economy will come to an end. We would lose a lot of jobs and industries, especially among small and medium-sized enterprises that cannot buy gas from Qatar or the United States. They will be left without gas supplies, or it will be too expensive, and then the companies will simply close," he stressed.

Niemeyer noted that large industrial enterprises are likely to be able to adapt to the new conditions, but small and medium-sized companies, which largely support the German economy, will be in the most vulnerable position.

"The backbone of German industry is at stake, and people will blame Chancellor Friedrich Merz, not his predecessor Olaf Scholz," the politician added.

The British newspaper UnHerd reported on June 2 that Friedrich Merz insists on an eternal ban on cooperation with the Russian Federation in the form of supplies via the Nord Stream–2 gas pipeline, as this allegedly could ruin European industry. According to the author of the article, the decision of the German Chancellor is meaningless, since the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe has economic and strategic advantages.
