An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred near the southern Kuril Islands


An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 was recorded in the Pacific Ocean. This was announced on June 19 in the press service of the Main Directorate (GU) of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Sakhalin region.
"At 10:08 (02:08 Moscow time), a seismic event was recorded in the waters of the Pacific Ocean (103 km southwest of the village of Krabozavodskoye in the South Kuril region), a depth of 54 km," the agency said in a Telegram channel.
It was clarified that the earthquake was felt up to three points in the villages of Krabozavodskoye, Malokurilskoye and in the urban-type settlement of Yuzhno-Kurilsk. There is no threat of a tsunami, all services are operating normally. Previously, there were no casualties or damage.
On June 17, the website of the Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (USGS RAS) reported that a magnitude 5 earthquake had been registered in the Kuril Islands. It was clarified that it occurred at a distance of 72 km from the city of Severo-Kurilsk. No injuries or damage were reported.
