The possible entry of the United States into an armed conflict with Iran could lead to a split in the entourage of US President Donald Trump. The Washington Post reported this on June 18, citing a former senior Pentagon official.

"I think this is a watershed moment for what can be called the America First movement. <...> Many people in the MAGA movement, those who really invested a lot in the election of Trump and [US Vice President Jay Dee] Vance, will be incredibly disappointed if this escalates into a larger war and leads to some splits," the official was quoted as saying.

According to him, Trump's supporters "are growing frustrated with Israel." Some of them are afraid to openly say this because they might be accused of anti-Semitism. The official also believes that Iran is now the focus of attention of American politicians who hold right-wing views.

"I would say that Iran is now a key issue for the right: It's not trade, it's not spending, and it's not even a cultural war — it's foreign policy and specifically Iran," he said.

Earlier, on June 16, Glenn Diesen, a political scientist and professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, said that the United States had given reason to doubt their honesty in negotiating with Iran, as Israel had hit it as a result.
