The doctor explained the causes of excessive sweating and ways to deal with it.

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can occur even at rest, without obvious causes such as heat or physical exertion. On June 19, Polina Lepilova, a general practitioner and neurologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about why this condition develops and how to deal with it.
"Hyperhidrosis can significantly worsen a person's quality of life — with increased sweating, they may experience difficulties in many areas of life. This, in turn, often causes anxiety and social isolation," the doctor notes.
As the specialist noted, there are two types of this condition: primary and secondary hyperhidrosis. The first is associated with a genetic predisposition and usually manifests itself in childhood or at a young age. It is characterized by symmetrical sweating, for example, on both palms or feet.
Secondary hyperhidrosis, according to Lepilova, develops against the background of other diseases or external factors. Possible causes include endocrine disorders (hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus), infections (tuberculosis), oncological processes, menopause, or taking certain medications, including antidepressants and antipyretics. Unlike primary hyperhidrosis, secondary hyperhidrosis can be either local or affect the entire body.
In addition to profuse sweating, patients may experience skin damage, an unpleasant odor, and even fungal infections. For an accurate diagnosis, the doctor recommends contacting a dermatologist, who will conduct an examination and, if necessary, prescribe additional tests, such as an iodine starch test or blood tests for hormones and glucose levels. In some cases, it may be necessary to consult specialized specialists — an endocrinologist or a neurologist.
Treatment of hyperhidrosis depends on its form and location. Effective methods include special antiperspirants with aluminum chloride, iontophoresis procedures, botulinum toxin injections, and in severe cases, surgery. To prevent secondary hyperhidrosis, it is important to control the underlying disease that causes sweating.
To reduce the manifestations of hyperhidrosis, Lepilova advises wearing clothes made of natural materials, avoiding stress, limiting the consumption of spicy foods, coffee and alcohol, and regularly engaging in moderate physical activity. Patients who have undergone treatment are recommended to periodically repeat preventive procedures as prescribed by a doctor.
"Patients who have previously been treated for hyperhidrosis, in order to prevent an exacerbation, for example, on the eve of the summer season or before important events, it is recommended to periodically repeat preventive courses of ionophoresis or botulinum therapy as prescribed by a doctor," the therapist concluded.
Earlier, on April 2, a psychiatrist, PhD, expert of the social project Dementia.net Maria Shtan told Izvestia about the main consequences of prolonged stress. Chronic stress increases the risk of developing dementia, especially in the elderly, and anxiety can also cause coronary heart disease.
