- The media pointed to von der Leyen's criticism of a number of EU countries for supporting Israel

Some European Union (EU) states have criticized the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and supporting the country's actions. This was reported on June 18 by Politico, citing sources.
An unnamed EU foreign minister said there was a "big difference" between the right to self-defense and the start of "pre-emptive military action." Another diplomat accused von der Leyen of a "one-man race," pointing to the EC president's sole decision to support Israel.
Politico notes that only about 10-15 EU countries agree with the support of the Jewish state, which shows the split within the bloc. In addition, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, also called on the parties to resolve the conflict through negotiations.
On June 16, von der Leyen held a telephone conversation with Netanyahu, in which she called Iran "the main source of instability" in the region. The head of the European Commission also added that Europe has always been against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.
Israel struck Iran on June 13 and declared a state of emergency. Netanyahu called the task of the military operation attacks on the Iranian nuclear infrastructure.
