- Politico pointed to the EU's difficulties in sanctions policy without the support of the United States.

Without Washington's support, it will be difficult for the European Union (EU) not only to monitor the implementation of restrictions on Russian energy imports, but also to convince even its own members to abandon them. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 18.
"On Monday, in an interview with reporters, [US President Donald] Trump has made it clear that he is not yet interested in strengthening sanctions [in the energy sector], complaining about how expensive they are for the United States," the publication clarifies.
The publication notes that despite the fact that the EU has moved further than expected by introducing new restrictions on energy supplies in order to reduce financial flows to Russia, without Washington's support, it will be difficult for Brussels not only to monitor the implementation of these measures, but also to enforce them from its own member states.
Semafor reported earlier in the day that the U.S. Senate postponed the discussion of sanctions against Russia due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. It is indicated that restrictive measures are likely to be considered in July.
