Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday, June 18, announced his intention to nationalize the Electric Grids of Armenia company, which belongs to Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian businessman and head of the Tashir Group of companies.

"I think it's time to nationalize Electric Networks (Armenia) CJSC (ESA). This will happen quickly, and I set the task for all employees of the EAEC to faithfully perform their work duties," Pashinyan wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

A day earlier, it was reported that Karapetyan was being tried to be detained for speaking out in support of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It was clarified that Interior Ministry officers arrived at Karapetyan's house immediately after he made a statement in defense of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Political analysts clarified that Karapetyan was specifically targeted. It's not just about the intercession of a businessman for the church. According to polls, the philanthropist is quite popular in the republic, and hopes are pinned on him as the future leader of the nation, who will be able to solve many of the state's problems.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 17 that Russia would assist Karapetyan in respecting his legitimate rights.
