Details of the detention of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan by Armenian security forces in his home after he spoke out against Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's attacks on the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) have become known.

According to his correspondent Alexander Tuzikov, as night fell, the confrontation only became more widespread. So, 1.5 thousand people held the defense of Karapetyan's house, they also blocked the entire street. If security forces appeared, people were ready to become human shields. They came to Karapetyan's defense, as he supported the AAC when Pashinyan sharply criticized it back in May. He also accused Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II of not observing his vow of celibacy and demanded his resignation.

"What opinion should I have: a small group, forgetting the history of Armenia, the history of the Armenian Church for thousands of years, attacked the Armenian Church, the Armenian people. Since I have always been on the side of the Armenian Church and the Armenian people, I will take a direct part in this. If the politicians fail, we will intervene in the campaign against the Church in our own way," Karapetyan said.

Eyewitnesses noted that representatives of the security forces broke the arms of two people who did not allow them to go to the house of the Armenian businessman. In addition, during the attempt to arrest Karapetyan, several dozen people were detained without explanation. Despite this, it was not possible to arrest Karapetyan himself. Moreover, influential bloggers noted that Pashinyan intends to approve a self-controlled Catholicos to actually seize power in the Armenian Apostolic Church, although, according to the country's Constitution, the church is not subordinate to the state.

Political analysts, in turn, clarified that Karapetyan was specifically targeted. It's not just about the intercession of a businessman for the church. According to polls, the philanthropist is quite popular in the republic, and hopes are pinned on him as the future leader of the nation, who will be able to solve many of the state's problems.

Tuzikov also noted that Pashinyan, sensing danger, turned to threats against Karapetyan. And then he turned to direct insults.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 17 that Russia would provide assistance to Karapetyan, whose house was being searched amid his support for the Armenian Apostolic Church. According to her, the Russian side will "provide him with the necessary assistance so that all his legitimate rights are respected."

On the same day, it was reported that Karapetyan was being tried to be detained for speaking out in support of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It was clarified that the Interior Ministry officers arrived at Karapetyan's house immediately after he made a statement in defense of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
