US President Donald Trump transferred Greenland from the area of responsibility of the European Command to the control of the United States Northern Command, changing the plan of the combat command of the armed forces. This was announced on June 17 by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

"This change will strengthen the ability of the Combined Forces to defend the territory of the United States, contributing to a more reliable defense of the western hemisphere and deepening relations with Arctic allies and partners," Defense News quoted Parnell as saying.

In a statement, the Pentagon presented the review as part of a broader review of its Joint Command Plan, which divides the world into separate military units and defines the roles and responsibilities of U.S. combatant commands.

No other changes to the Joint Command Plan were included in the announcement.

"Joining Greenland to the Northern Command will mean that it will be treated not as an outpost, but as the cornerstone of the US security position in the Far North," said Iris Ferguson, a former Pentagon official specializing in the Arctic.

However, Ferguson warned that this shift risked alienating European allies and that Denmark should not be "sidelined" amid perestroika.

On April 27, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that the autonomy was ready to cooperate with the United States, but wanted respect and would never be owned by anyone.

Earlier, on March 30, Nielsen said that the United States would not get the island into its own hands. He urged Greenlanders not to be afraid of Trump's statements, but to respond to them with calmness, dignity and unity.
