The number of thefts of funds in online banks has halved, despite a 50% increase in fraudulent attacks, VTB Vice President Dmitry Revyakin said on June 18 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).

According to him, due to the increased protection of online services, attackers are increasingly using social engineering methods and convincing citizens to transfer money on their own.

"Since the beginning of the year, we have seen a trend towards a decrease in the number of thefts of Russians' funds in remote services. This is the result of effective protection measures on the part of banks and increased customer awareness," said Revyakin.

He added that fraudsters are increasingly using so-called drops, and in the fall a law will come into force that increases penalties for illegal transactions with other people's cards.

According to VTB, the number of cases of fraud against minors has increased in recent months, and pensioners have become 22% less likely to become victims of fraud. To increase security, the bank implements biometric identification, NFC technology transaction confirmation, and various forms of self-locking, including the possibility of refusing to receive loans.

On the same day, it was reported that half of Russians agreed to donate biometrics in order to protect themselves from fraudsters. According to the study, trust in biometrics has increased significantly over the past six months, and the number of those who doubt its security has almost halved. Already 27% are confident in the reliability and convenience of the technology, another 13% consider it safe but inconvenient to register. 27% of Russians have already passed biometrics, 29% plan to do so in the near future.
