According to data for May 2025, coal accounted for 28.2% of the total loading on the Russian Railways network. A total of 26.7 million tons of coal were transported by rail, of which 9.7 million tons were exported to the east. This was reported by the press service of Russian Railways, referring to the survey data of the Institute of Economics and Transport Development.

According to the company, the volume of transportation could have been higher, however, according to the already agreed requests from GU-12, shippers in May did not submit 5.8 million tons of coal for transportation, including 4.4 million tons for export, of which 3 million tons for the east.

Experts emphasized that Russian Railways has a sufficient number of wagons to provide large-scale transportation. The estimated fleet for carrying out the declared volume of transportation is 313 thousand gondola cars. At the same time, it actually contains 26% more — 393 thousand units.

The work of Russian Railways and the owners of wagons with excess rolling stock continues to bring results, the company said. It improves the quality of service for shippers. 97% of all shipments were delivered on time in May, which is 0.4 percentage points higher than in April.
