Former Sri Lankan president questioned U.S. neutrality in Israeli strikes on Iran

The United States has always supported Israel in repelling missile attacks and bombing, so the statements of the United States about its non-involvement in strikes against Iran are questionable. Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe told Izvestia on Tuesday, June 17.
He noted that two key questions remain open: what role the United States intends to play in stopping the bombing and in bringing Iran back to the negotiating table. According to the politician, Israel launched the attack despite Washington's decision to continue negotiations and hold the final round after the agreed 60-day deadline.
"We cannot approve this, because while negotiations are underway, it is impossible to start bombing, especially in the absence of evidence that Iran has created a nuclear bomb," Wickramasinghe stressed.
The former president also noted that Iran is ready to return to negotiations, calling for the creation of appropriate conditions for them.
He added that the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran will increase pressure on the governments of Muslim countries. Vikmarasinghe noted that the situation in Gaza has acquired special significance for some regions of Sri Lanka.
On the same day, CNN, citing sources in the US administration, said that Israel would not be able to destroy Iran's nuclear infrastructure without US help. According to the publication, the American military leadership, including the Central Command, perceives the threat from Iran more acutely than the civilian intelligence services, and on the eve of the Israeli operation advocated increased support for Tel Aviv.
Israel struck Iran on June 13 and declared a state of emergency. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the task of the military operation attacks on the Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Later, on June 14, the Fars news agency reported on Iran's likely plans to strike US military bases in the Middle East.
