The European Commission (EC) has proposed to ban the import of pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia by the end of 2027. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on June 17.

"The European Commission on Tuesday proposed to introduce a legally binding ban on the import of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU by the end of 2027," the publication says.

The agency indicated that the import of this type of Russian fuel will be prohibited from January 1, 2026, in accordance with contracts signed before the end of this year. Also, imports under long-term contracts will be prohibited from January 1, 2028. According to Reuters, these actions will put an end to the use of gas from Russia in the European Union (EU).

On the eve of the European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen said that the EC does not intend to pay compensation to EU countries that are gradually abandoning Russian gas.

Prior to that, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the EC's proposals to abandon Russian gas include a ban on concluding new gas contracts. It is specified that this decision was made as a result of the EC's intentions to reduce imports of Russian oil and gas to the EU by 2027.
