In Primorye, a doctor was imprisoned for eight years for prescribing operations without evidence

In Primorsky Krai, an orthopedic traumatologist who prescribed surgeries for patients who did not have indications for surgery was sentenced to eight years in prison. This was announced on June 17 by the press service of the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office.

"The man <...> in the period from March 2015 to May 2018 convinced patients of the need to perform operations on knee, hip and ankle joints on a paid basis in the absence of absolute indications for the surgical interventions he proposed," the department said in a Telegram channel.

The victims transferred a total of 5.7 million rubles to the accused. Patients paid part of the amount for the surgery to the cashier, and the other was transferred directly to the doctor. At the same time, all of them, even those who really needed treatment, did not actually undergo surgery: the orthopedist simply administered anesthesia to the victims.

According to the incident, the Frunzensky district Court imposed a fine of 1.2 million rubles. Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal case under Parts 2 and 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Fraud committed using official position, causing significant and large-scale damage"). The convict was sentenced to eight years of imprisonment to be served in a general regime penal colony. He is also prohibited from practicing medicine for three years.
