WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, an organization recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation) will have new features, including advertising, paid subscriptions, and channel monetization. This was announced on June 16 in a press release posted on the official website of the application.

"We want to help administrators, organizations and companies develop on WhatsApp. To do this, we have developed three new functions," the press service said.

It is specified that the new functions will affect the "Current" tab, where the "Status" and "Channels" sections are available. Users will be able to sign up for monthly paid subscriptions to the channels in order to support the authors. It will also be possible to promote channels. Administrators will be able to increase their visibility. In addition, advertising will be available in the "Status" so that people can find products and services and start correspondence.

"The new features will appear only on the Current tab, separate from your personal chats. If you use WhatsApp only to communicate with friends and family, then nothing will change for you," the article clarifies.

On June 10, the Tagansky District Court of Moscow informed Izvestia about the imposition of a fine for the WhatsApp messenger under Part 2 of Article 13.41 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation ("Failure to delete prohibited information") in the amount of 3.5 million rubles.
