Half of Russians agreed to donate biometrics in order to protect themselves from fraudsters, VTB provided such data on Monday, June 16, following the results of a June survey before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF—2025).

The desire to protect funds from fraudsters turned out to be the main motive for Russians to donate biometrics — 52% of the survey participants named this reason. In addition, 23% of respondents chose biometrics for convenience, 22% for quick authorization in banks and on the Gosuslug portal, 21% for the opportunity to withdraw money without a card, and 15% for contactless payment.

According to the study, trust in biometrics has grown significantly over the past six months, and the number of those who doubt its security has almost halved. Already 27% are confident in the reliability and convenience of the technology, another 13% consider it safe but inconvenient to register. 27% of Russians have already passed biometrics, 29% plan to do so in the near future.

"We see that trust in biometrics is gradually growing, especially in online banking...> If it becomes easier to pass and use biometrics, then new services will appear faster — in retail, transport, finance and other areas," said Olga Skorobogatova, First Deputy President and Chairman of the Board of VTB.

To expand access, VTB is testing the collection of biometrics on tablets with the Russian operating system (OS), which is possible anywhere. The bank stressed that the real breakthrough will provide the ability to collect biometrics directly in mobile applications.

On June 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing the use of a single biometric system for real estate transactions. According to the document, the application for state registration of the transfer of ownership and the electronic documents attached to it can be signed with an enhanced qualified electronic signature without the need to first make a special entry in the Unified State Register of Real Estate.
