Constant lack of sleep leads to a decrease in the volume of key areas of the brain responsible for memory, attention, and spatial orientation. On June 16, Viktor Lishin, a general practitioner, a preventologist and an expert on genetic tests, told Izvestia.

"This has long been a proven fact: the brain, which does not get enough rest, cannot fully recover. The nervous system works like a battery — it consumes energy during the day, and at night it must replenish its reserves," the specialist explains.

The areas responsible for memory and attention are the first to suffer from lack of sleep. In conditions of resource scarcity, the body shuts down "secondary" functions, preserving vital ones. This is why cognitive abilities deteriorate in the first place.

In addition, the doctor explained how lack of sleep is associated with Alzheimer's disease. According to him, this is primarily a genetic disease associated with a mutation of the APOE gene. However, a healthy lifestyle, including adequate sleep, can reduce the risks.

Lishin emphasizes that intelligence is 50% dependent on genetics and 50% on lifestyle.

"Reading, memory training, cognitive development — all this helps to keep the brain in good shape. But the basis is still a genetic predisposition," the specialist summarizes.

The doctor recommends paying special attention to the quality of sleep, avoiding late meals and regularly training the brain to minimize the negative effects on cognitive functions.

On June 16, an oncologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, Suna Isakova, told Izvestia about the non-obvious symptoms of a brain tumor. According to her, brain tumors are detected annually in 25 people out of 100 thousand. About a third of cases turn out to be malignant. The disease can develop at any age, but children and people over 50 are most vulnerable.
