Russia's exclusion from the G8 was a mistake. This was announced on June 16 by US President Donald Trump before the G7 summit in Canada.

"Once upon a time, the G7 was the G8, [former US President] Barack Obama and a man named [former Canadian Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau did not want to see Russia in it. I would say that it was a mistake, because I think there would not be a conflict now if Russia were in the G8," he said.

The G7 currently includes the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan. Russia has been a member of the international club for 17 years, since 1997. In 2014, Western countries stopped working in the G8 format and returned to the G7 format.

On June 15, Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou called on the United States to leave the G7. So, he commented on the material of the Politico newspaper, according to which the "Big Seven" became a confrontation between the G6 countries and Trump.
