The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) has sentenced the commander of the Azov battalion mortar battery (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia) Ivan Nozhechkin and the numbers of the mortar crew of Yegor Yakovenko's battalion were sentenced to 26 years due to the shelling of residents of the DPR in Mariupol. The regional prosecutor's office announced this on June 16.
They were sentenced in accordance with Part 3 of Article 30 ("Preparation for a crime and attempted crime"), paragraphs "a", "e", "g", "l" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Attempted murder of two or more persons committed in a generally dangerous manner, organized a group motivated by political and ideological hatred"), Part 2 of Article 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Intentional damage to other people's property committed in a generally dangerous manner"), Part 1 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Use of prohibited means and methods of warfare").
According to the court, in March 2022, Nozhechkin ordered the shelling of the Agrobase settlement of the Mangushevsky municipal district of the DPR. It was carried out by Yakovenko and his colleagues. As a result of the incident, residents of two private houses, who were hiding in the basement, were damaged. They managed to escape.
The court sentenced Nozhechkin to 25 years in prison, Yakovenko to 26 years in prison to serve his sentence in a high-security penal colony.
Earlier, on March 22, 2024, it was reported that the Supreme Court of the DPR sentenced ten militants of the Ukrainian national battalion "Azov", which also included Nozhechkin and Yakovenko. It was then established that from March 7 to April 15, 2022, the defendants fired 120-mm Czechoslovak-made VZ-82 mortars at a residential area on the western outskirts of Mariupol. It is specified that they subsequently surrendered themselves to the Russian military.
