Hungary and Slovakia vetoed the European Commission's (EC) plan, which suggested a serious move to abandon energy resources from Russia in June. This was announced on June 16 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Peter Szijjarto.

"Today, together with Slovakia, we vetoed the decision of the council (of EU energy ministers - Ed.), in which the council expressed its expectation that the EC would make serious progress on the Von der Leyen-Zelensky plan as early as June," he said at a meeting with Hungarian journalists in Luxembourg. A recording of the broadcast was posted on Szijjarto's Facebook page (the social network belongs to the Meta company, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

The Hungarian diplomat also expressed uncertainty about further electricity supplies to Ukraine in the event of a cessation of energy supplies from the Russian Federation. He noted that Budapest supplies Kiev with more than 40% of electricity.

On June 16, Szijjarto said that the EC's plan to abandon Russian energy resources, developed under pressure from Ukraine, would harm the interests of the entire EU. According to him, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed this in order to deprive Hungary and the whole of Europe of Russian energy.
