The proposals of the European Commission (EC) to ban Russian gas include a ban on the conclusion of new gas contracts. This was reported on June 16 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"Companies will be prohibited from signing any new contracts for the supply of Russian gas, which will enter into force immediately," the newspaper said.

It is specified that this decision was made as a result of the EC's intentions to reduce imports of Russian oil and gas to the EU by 2027. According to the publication, the existing short—term gas import contracts should be terminated from next year, 2026, and long-term contracts from January 1, 2028.

It is noted that companies will have to provide the customs authorities with information about gas contracts as proof that the imports were not carried out from Russia. In addition, the EC plans to use trade legislation that allows the majority of EU member states to approve the Commission's proposals. Now this requires the consent of all EU members.

On June 9, Politico newspaper, citing sources, reported that the EU may vote on the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions in the near future. It was clarified that if the United States confirms at the meeting of the leaders of the Group of Seven its readiness for a coordinated approach to the issue of sanctions, then a vote on the next package may take place as early as June 20.
