The Investigative Committee opened a case on the hostage-taking of residents of the Kursk region by the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia is establishing the circumstances of the capture of civilians in the Kursk region, committed by the Armed Formations of Ukraine (VFU). This was announced on June 16 by the press service of the department.

According to the Investigative Committee, in August 2024, Ukrainian servicemen illegally crossed the border and entered the town of Sudzha in the Sudzha district of the Kursk region. There they took civilians hostage in order to destabilize the authorities. After that, the victims were taken to the Sumy region of Ukraine, where they were held until May 2025.

One of them reported that on August 12, 2024, during the shelling, he was forced to take shelter in an apartment building. After going outside, the militants detained him, used force, blindfolded him and took him out of Russia. He was held in a cell in Sumy until May 2025.

"With the assistance of the Russian side, he and other victims were released and returned to their homeland," said Svetlana Petrenko, an official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

As part of the investigation of a criminal case initiated under articles on terrorist attack and hostage-taking.

The day before, it was reported that investigators began investigating the injuries of two residents of Rylsk, Kursk region, as a result of an attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on residential buildings. It was clarified that a local resident and her mother, who is currently in intensive care, were injured in the attack.
