- FT has learned about the plans of the EU countries to abandon the import of Russian uranium by 2030

The member states of the European Union (EU) plan to abandon the import of Russian uranium by 2030. This was reported on June 16 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
"Ideally, the European Commission would like the European nuclear sector to be free of Russian imports by the 2030s," unnamed EU officials told the newspaper.
At the same time, it is clarified that plans for a phase-out are facing serious resistance from Hungary and Slovakia. According to a joint statement by the ministers of the two countries, phasing out nuclear energy by 2030 will lead to "higher and more unstable prices", as well as jeopardize the security of their energy supply.
FT emphasizes that Russia occupies 55% of the global uranium enrichment market. At the same time, the European organizations Orano and Urenco, together with Russian and Chinese miners, account for about 40% of global capacity.
Anonymous EU representatives noted that the problem would be the creation of a conversion industry in Europe that could compete with Rosatom at lower prices.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said on June 16 that the European Commission's (EC) plan to abandon Russian energy resources, developed under pressure from Ukraine, would harm the interests of the entire EU. According to him, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed this in order to deprive Hungary and the whole of Europe of Russian energy.
