The Narva-1 checkpoint on the border with Russia may be closed if queues increase and crossing conditions worsen. This was announced on June 15 by Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro.

Taro also opposed the transition of Narva-1 to round-the-clock operation and the reopening of the Narva-2 pedestrian crossing.

"If you open the checkpoint at night, you will have to reduce the resources involved in the daytime, which, in turn, will increase the time it takes to cross the border during the day," the ERR television and radio company quoted the minister as saying.

On May 30, the Estonian Foreign Ministry announced that the country was ending negotiations with Russia on navigation on the Narva River. The reason for this decision was the alleged refusal of the Russian Federation to cooperate on security issues.
