British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that for the first time, the British foreign intelligence service MI6 will be headed by a woman — a career intelligence officer, Blaze Metreveli, has been appointed to the post. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on Sunday, June 15.

Metreveli joined the service in 1999. She is currently also the CEO of MI6's Q department, responsible for technology and innovation. The current head of British intelligence, Richard Moore, will step down after five years in charge of MI6 in the fall of 2025.

By tradition, the head of MI6 carries the internal designation "C" (short for "chief") and is the only agency employee whose name is mentioned and recognized publicly, the newspaper reports.

According to the statement, she was educated at Cambridge University and has worked in operational positions in the Middle East and Europe for most of her career. Last year, Metreveli was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on March 20 that Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe became the first woman to serve as president of the organization.
