The media reported on the exclusion of Nicolas Sarkozy from the Legion of Honor

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been expelled from the Legion of Honor and the Order of Merit due to a court ruling. This was reported on June 15 by the AFP news agency, citing sources.
"Former President Nicolas Sarkozy has been expelled from the Legion of Honor after being finally sentenced to one year in prison for corruption in the wiretapping case," the agency noted.
Sarkozy is accused not only of wiretapping telephone conversations, but also of trying to bribe the magistrate of the Court of Cassation, Gilbert Azibert, in the hope of obtaining confidential information. At the end of 2024, the Court of Cassation upheld the sentence of three years in prison imposed by the Court of Appeal in 2023.
According to the agency, Sarkozy is also accused of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign, which will be tried in September.
According to the agency, Sarkozy became the second French head of state to be stripped of this title after Marshal Philippe Petain, who was convicted in August 1945 of treason and intelligence on the side of the enemy.
Earlier, on May 27, the Paris prosecutor's office requested seven years in prison for Sarkozy. The department also requested a fine of €300,000 for the former head of state and the inability to be elected for five years.
