UN Secretary General expresses concern about Israeli strikes on Iran

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear infrastructure. This was announced on April 13 on the organization's website.
"The Secretary General condemns any military escalation in the Middle East. He is particularly concerned about Israeli attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran, while negotiations are underway between Iran and the United States on the status of Iran's nuclear program," the statement said.
Guterres recalled the obligation of the UN member states to follow the norms of international law and adhere to the charter of the organization.
Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran and declared a state of emergency across the country earlier in the day. As a result, the head of the General Staff of the Iranian army and several high-ranking atomic scientists were killed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the purpose of the military operation is to attack Iran's nuclear infrastructure, as well as ballistic missile factories. The Israeli side called the attack "necessary for self-defense."
