U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday, June 13, that Israel considers the strikes on Iran "necessary for self-defense."

"[Rubio] said that Israeli officials had informed the US administration that its actions were "necessary for self—defense," NBC News reported.

At the same time, the administration of US President Donald Trump distanced itself from Israel's strikes on Iran, saying that the country had taken "unilateral actions."

"President Trump and the administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and maintain close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not attack U.S. interests or personnel," Rubio said.

Earlier in the day, Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran and declared a state of emergency throughout the country.
