- Politico has learned about the creation of a special envoy for Ukrainian refugees in the EU.

The European Union (EU) has created the post of special envoy for Ukrainian refugees in the bloc, to which former Commissioner Ylva Johansson will be appointed. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 12, citing sources.
"Two officials with knowledge of the appointment told Politico that Johansson will take up a newly created position where she will help oversee the commission's recently presented long-term strategy for Ukrainian refugees," the publication says.
It is noted that Johansson previously held a ministerial position in Sweden, and from 2019 to 2024 was the EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs. In this position, she reportedly visited Ukraine several times, including a visit to a refugee camp on the border with Romania.
"Last month, the European Commission extended the temporary protection of approximately 4.3 million displaced Ukrainians who have found refuge in the EU," the newspaper said.
On June 8, the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) pointed out the EU's inability to resolve the issue of refugees from Ukraine. According to the publication, after the outbreak of the military conflict, about 4.3 million people from Ukraine received temporary protection status in EU countries. Recently, the European Commission proposed extending it again, until 2027, although this status is usually valid only for three years.
