Hungary and Slovakia plan to oppose the plan to abandon Russian energy sources. This was announced by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto after a telephone conversation with his Slovak counterpart Juraj Blanar.

Szijjarto noted that the initiative of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, leads to a violation of the sovereignty of the two states.

"The formation of a national energy policy is a matter of sovereignty, and no one can interfere in it. For the sake of Brussels and Kiev, we are not ready to change our existing energy sources to more expensive and unreliable ones!" TASS quoted Szijjarto as saying.

In addition, he stressed that the Hungarian government will protect families from increased utility bills, which are being done to support the conflict in Ukraine.

It is specified that the plan to abandon energy sources of the Russian Federation will be discussed on June 16 at a ministerial meeting of the European Union in Luxembourg.

Earlier, on May 16, von der Leyen threatened to lower the ceiling on Russian oil prices and strengthen sanctions against the Russian financial sector. In addition, she noted at the time that the EU would impose sanctions on oil tankers.

Later, on May 28, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the German authorities would do everything to prevent the resumption of operation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. He noted Germany's intention to increase pressure on Russia in the field of tightening sanctions.
