Former Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Amin Salam was arrested on the order of the Prosecutor General of the republic Jamal Hajjar, he is suspected of falsification, embezzlement of public funds and blackmail of insurance companies. This was reported on June 11 by The National newspaper, citing a high-ranking judicial source.

Former Lebanese Economy Minister Amin Salam was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation into alleged financial crimes.

An investigation is currently underway, the newspaper said.

As indicated, the complaint was filed by Farid Boustani, a Lebanese MP who heads the parliamentary committee on Economics. According to the committee, Salam signed contracts with foreign firms for services at an inflated price and misappropriated funds from the insurance companies contribution fund, which is under the control of the country's Ministry of Economy.

The ex-minister does not admit his guilt, the article noted.

On June 10, the Supreme Court of Argentina upheld the sentence of former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to six years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office.
