In New York, producer Weinstein was found guilty of rape

American film producer Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape by a jury in New York during a retrial. This was reported by the BBC on June 11.

"A jury of seven women and five men deliberated for five days during a six-week trial before voting unanimously to find the Hollywood producer guilty," the publication says.

This sentence was in addition to the 16-year prison term that Weinstein will need to serve after being convicted of sexual misconduct in Los Angeles.

The trial was based on the testimony of three women — television producer Miriam Haley, actress Jessica Mann and model Kaya Sokola. They accused him of using power to commit violent acts of a sexual nature.

It is clarified that the court of appeal overturned Weinstein's previous conviction for sexual crimes in New York in April last year. He ruled that the 73-year-old man was not given a fair trial in 2020 because the judge accepted the testimony of the women who had brought charges against him that went beyond the scope under consideration.

Later, in September, Weinstein was charged with further sexual assault. In turn, a representative of the American film producer said that the trial was "fair until it came to a jury discussion."

In 2017, a number of actresses, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek, accused Weinstein of harassment. According to the victims, he persuaded the actresses to intimacy, promising assistance in their career growth. Amid the scandal, Weinstein was fired from his own company, and the New York state authorities launched an investigation into him.

In March 2020, a court in New York sentenced Weinstein to 23 years in prison on two counts of rape. Six women testified against him. In February 2023, he was sentenced in Los Angeles to another 16 years in prison due to another charge. In April 2024, Weinstein's conviction was overturned in New York. On September 5, the producer was cleared of charges of indecent behavior in the UK.
