Scientists have discovered a new species of tyrannosaurus "Prince Dragon" in Mongolia, which lived 86 million years ago, it may be the forerunner of giant tyrannosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex. This was reported on June 11 by the scientific portal Livescience with reference to the authors of the study.
"Scientists named the dinosaur the "dragon prince of Mongolia" (Khankhuuluu mongoliensis), and the genus name was based on the romanization of the Mongolian words "prince" and "dragon," according to the publication of the portal.
It is specified that the discovery was made as a result of parts of the skeleton of tyrannosaurs discovered in Mongolia.
The "dragon Prince" may have lived 20 million years earlier than the Tyrannosaurus rex. Its length reached 4 m and its weight was 750 kg— This dinosaur species walked on two legs and had a long snout with a mouthful of sharp teeth, the Reuters news agency added.
According to paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky from the University of Calgary in Canada and a co-author of the study, the name "Dragon Prince has a connection with his ancestor. Tyrannosaurus rex means "tyrant king of lizards".
"In the name, we wanted to reflect the fact that Khankhuuluu mongoliensis was a small, early form that did not turn into a king. It was still the prince," she said.
It is noted that the remains of the "Prince of the Dragon" helped researchers unravel the evolutionary history of the connection of this species with tyrannosaurs. According to scientists, it was a link between its smaller predecessors and later true tyrannosaurs.
On January 3, the largest chain of dinosaur footprints in the country was discovered in the UK in one of the quarries of Oxfordshire. It is specified that the dinosaur tracks were first noticed by Gary Johnson, a quarry worker, when he was driving an excavator. In the 1990s, another footprint was also discovered nearby, so the man guessed that it could be a dinosaur footprint.
