The current German ambassador to Ukraine, diplomat Martin Jaeger, will become the new head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), replacing Bruno Kahl in this post. This was reported on June 11 by Der Spiegel magazine, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the decision on the appointment was made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, since the BND is directly subordinate to the chancellery, and the choice of the head of the service falls within his competence.

The German government has not yet officially confirmed the personnel changes, however, according to the magazine, the decision has already been made.

"According to the plan, the current president of the BND, Bruno Kahl, will become the German ambassador to the Vatican," the publication clarifies.

With the appointment of Jaeger, one of the most experienced crisis diplomats at the German Foreign Ministry, the service will be reoriented. In the coming years, BND will receive a significant increase in funding, as well as more flexibility in conducting exploration abroad and technical activities.

Merz's popularity has increased by 13 percentage points over the past month and reached 36%, according to a survey conducted by the Insa Institute on June 7. In general, the work of the federal government was also assessed more positively — 37% were satisfied with it (+8 percentage points compared to a month earlier).

As Herman Binkert, head of Insa, explained, most of the country's residents liked the new chancellor's position on migration policy, and the Germans share it.
