The decision of the European Union (EU) countries to start financially supporting the conflict in Ukraine and at the same time abandon the consumption of energy resources from Russia led to a deep crisis and a real economic catastrophe for the EU. This was announced on June 11 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The politician explained that huge sums are being spent on helping Ukraine, and against this background, the EU has imposed sanctions against the Russian energy sector.

"It killed the European economy. Inflation is rising rapidly. Energy prices are rising sharply. <...> We have driven ourselves into a corner," Orban said in an interview with American journalist Ben Shapiro. A recording of their conversation was posted on the Prime Minister's Facebook page (owned by the extremist Meta company recognized in Russia, its activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).

On June 8, Orban said that EU countries should conclude a strategic agreement with Russia and become stronger, rather than impose new sanctions against Moscow that destroy Hungary and the whole of Europe. He noted that Hungary has lost €20 billion in three years due to sanctions, which is a very significant amount for a small country.

Prior to that, on June 3, the politician accused Brussels of the fact that the EU had decided that Ukraine needed to continue the conflict, and noted that "Brussels bureaucrats do not support the US peace plans." The Hungarian Prime Minister admitted that the conflict in Ukraine could drag on for a long time. He added that this would lead to serious consequences for the security and economy of the European Union.
