Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of Russia, sent an appeal to Julia Kleckner, President of the Bundestag, in which he recalled which army took Berlin. The text of the relevant statement was published on June 11 on the website of the lower house of Parliament.

Volodin noted that the Russian Federation respects the contribution of the Allies to the victory in World War II, but the main role in the destruction of German Nazism was played by the USSR and its Red Army.

"It was the Soviet Union that made a decisive contribution to the victory. <...> It's annoying that you can't even give the exact name of the army that took Berlin, calling it the "former Soviet." In this regard, I have to remind you that it was the Red Army," the chairman of the State Duma emphasized, addressing Kleckner.

On June 5, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, pointed out Washington's contribution to the victory over fascism in World War II. At the same time, he did not mention the contribution of the Red Army to the liberation of the country from the invaders. In this regard, Volodin sent an appeal to Kleckner, in which he noted Mertz's distortion of historical facts.
