An electric fence was tested in Primorsky Krai to protect livestock from large predators. The check showed that a properly installed "electric shepherd" is able to protect pets from attack, the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Land of the Leopard" told PrimaMedia news agency.

The tests were conducted in an aviary with Amur tigers. A cage with a rabbit, an animal that is included in the diet of predators, was installed inside the electric fence. Not a single tiger dared to approach him after coming into contact with the current.

The test was conducted by specialists from the directorate of the Land of the Leopard Nature Reserve together with representatives of Gosokhotnadzor, the regional Ministry of Forestry and the White Lion Park Zoo. It lasted 13 hours, it was recorded on video.

"Cases when electric fences failed to stop a predator are sometimes explained by a low battery or insufficient visualization of the fence itself: the animals simply do not see it and, suddenly bumping into the wire, they unexpectedly break through it," explained Ekaterina Blidchenko, an employee of the scientific department of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Land of the Leopard".

The news agency clarifies that the method is already being used to protect pastures, apiaries, shift camps and house plots. Electric fences are especially common in apiaries, so beekeepers protect the hives from bears.

At the end of May, a bear attacked a 32-year-old resident of the village of Lenino in Primorsky Krai. The predator bit the man on the head, inflicted other serious injuries. The Primorets managed to escape by pretending to be dead. He has already had surgery using titanium plates. The victim Artyom Kodenkov himself told Izvestia about the incident.
