The European Commission (EC) proposes to blacklist 77 tankers and ban European Union (EU) countries from purchasing petroleum products from Russian raw materials. EC President Ursula von der Leyen announced this at a briefing on June 10.

"We will increase pressure on Russia by imposing powerful new sanctions. The restrictions under the 18th package will mainly affect the oil and banking sectors," she said.

Von der Leyen noted that the new sanctions, in particular, will affect 77 tankers. In addition, the head of the EC proposed to transform the existing ban on the use of the SWIFT system into a complete ban on transactions in the Russian Federation and extend the ban on transactions to financial operators in third countries that allegedly continue to trade with Russia bypassing sanctions.

"And we propose to apply such a ban on operations to 22 more Russian banks," she stressed.

On June 9, Politico newspaper, citing sources, reported that the European Union (EU) may vote on the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions in the near future. It is specified that if the United States confirms at the meeting of the leaders of the Group of Seven its readiness for a coordinated approach to the issue of sanctions, then a vote on the next package may take place as early as June 20.
