The Estonian authorities will rename the Russian Theater in Tallinn to the Sudalinna Theater (est. Sudalinna — city center) and reduce its funding by 15%. This was announced on June 10 by the portal of the Estonian national television ERR with reference to the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the country.

It is noted that the new name was approved the day before by the theater council and will soon be officially fixed by order of the Minister of Culture. At the same time, the theater will continue to stage performances in Russian, added Margus Allikmaa, Chairman of the council.

The Estonian Ministry of Culture also decided to reduce the financing of the theater by 15% in 2026, which "will inevitably affect the theater's activities," the material says.

Allikmaa clarified that with the name change, the content of the theater's activities will also change. According to him, artistic director Dmitry Petrenko has embarked on a "more European vector of development," and actors, directors and artists from Russia can no longer be invited to the theater.

The ERR newspaper reported on June 3 that the Tallinn City Council approved a draft decision on renaming the Center of Russian Culture to the Mer Cultural Center (Marine Boulevard). It is specified that the center will be subordinated to the art center "Cauldron of Culture", which effectively means the termination of the Center of Russian Culture as an independent organization.
