- Putin noted the importance of strengthening deterrence mechanisms in the field of bioweapons.

Russia advocates strengthening mechanisms to deter the development of weapons of mass destruction based on pathogens. This was announced on June 10 by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his greeting to the participants and organizers of the V International Scientific and Practical Conference "Global Threats to Biological Safety. Problems and solutions."
"Russia, together with partners from friendly countries, consistently advocates strengthening collective mechanisms to deter the development and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction based on the use of pathogenic microorganisms and toxins," reads the greeting posted on the Kremlin's website.
According to the head of state, Moscow attaches great importance to cooperation at the international level, as well as within the framework of regional initiatives and agreements.
In addition, he noted the readiness of the Russian Federation to provide assistance in responding to economic threats in any region of the world. At the same time, Putin stressed that cooperation in this context should take place in compliance with the principles of equality and respect for the sovereignty of all countries.
The President clarified that currently the issues of ensuring biological safety are particularly acute, including against the background of instability in the world and the lack of progress in achieving the goals of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, stressed on December 4 last year that the rapid development of technology could lead to the emergence of new biological weapons created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). He stressed that this issue requires the expansion of international cooperation at least at the level of agreements between individual States.
