French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, June 9, said that more than 60 countries have committed to ratify the UN Global Agreement on the Protection of the Oceans (Global Ocean Treaty — Ed.), which is scheduled to enter into force on January 1, 2026.

"At the moment, we have 55 ratifications, about 15 intentions to ratify with a specific date, and 15 more countries that intend to do so by the end of the year. Thus, by the [80th session] of the UN General Assembly, at least 60 necessary ratifications will be submitted to the UN," Macron said at a press conference during the UN Oceans meeting in Nice, which was broadcast on the page of the Elysee Palace in X (former. Twitter).

According to him, Macron is "confident" that this number of ratifications will be enough for the agreement to enter into force.

"We will finally have an international framework for the regulation and management of the high seas. We will finally be able to protect it and fight illegal fishing," the French president stressed.

In November 2024, the Attorney General of the US state of New York, Letitia James, sued PepsiCo and accused it of polluting nature with disposable packages. The statement notes that such single-use packaging quickly begins to break down and release dangerous microplastics into the environment. The substance was also found in fish living in Lake Erie and the Buffalo River.
