For violating the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, Israel could sentence eco-activist Greta Thunberg and other pro-Palestinian passengers of the Madeleine vessel to 10 years in prison. Lawyer Maria Yarmush told Izvestia about this on June 9.

She recalled that Israel has been blockading the Gaza Strip since 2007, and the country has a law on preventing entry into prohibited territories from 2016.

"According to their internal laws, they (Israel. They could have sentenced both the captain of the vessel and the participants in this breakthrough of the forbidden zone to 10 years in prison. But Israel has already experienced similar infiltrations into the blockaded Gaza Strip. They usually just expel foreign activists and ban them from re—entering Israel," Yarmush said.

She noted that international organizations may regard the actions of the Jewish state as a violation of humanitarian law and the implementation of illegal actions against the relevant actions.

"At the same time, any humanitarian actions or humanitarian supplies, for example, must be coordinated with Israel and, at least, with Egypt, as a country that is adjacent directly to the territory of the Gaza Strip," Yarmush recalled.

Since there was no agreement with the Israeli and Egyptian sides, Israel acted lawfully in the coastal territory in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the expert emphasized.

"Israel itself accuses the participants of this action of complicity with [the Palestinian radical movement] Hamas, but, nevertheless, there will be no further criminal prosecution, especially since Israel has already officially announced the deportation of [passengers and crew of the ship]," she concluded.

French MEP Rima Hassan said on May 28 that Thunberg intends to visit the Gaza Strip as part of a humanitarian mission, despite its blockade by the Israeli army. The Israeli Defense Ministry reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been instructed to prevent the "Greta Thunberg flotilla" from reaching the shores of the Gaza Strip.

On June 9, an alert was issued on the Madeline ship with Thunberg and other activists, the human rights activist accused the Israeli authorities of kidnapping. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that the ship is heading to the shores of Israel and all people on board the Madeline vessel will be sent to their home countries.
